The Center is proud to announce the 2008 Q Film Festival, which will take place October 10-12, 2008 at the newly renovated Art Theater on 4th St. in Retro Row of Long Beach.

The 2008 Q Film Festival will present several feature films and shorts, as well as documentaries, highlighting issues within the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community.

Opening night will feature local comedian, Carlease, and the showing of two episodes of the series Sordid Lives. The following cast members, as well as the producer and manager, will be present for a Q and A after the shows: DEL SHORES (MANAGER), JASON DOTTLEY (TY), ROSEMARY ALEXANDER (DR EVE), NEWELL ALEXANDER (WARDELL), DAVID COWGILL (ODELL), TED DETWILER (JACOB), EMERSON COLLINS (CO-PRODUCER & CHARACTER OF MAX), AND ANN WALKER (LAVONDA).

The cost of the opening night festivities is $30, or $50 if you attend the VIP party with cast members. Throughout the rest of the weekend ticket prices are $10 for shows prior to 6pm, and $15 for the men’s and women’s themed shows.

Pre and post VIP parties will take place throughout the weekend.  Documentaries and Transgender films will be shown during the day on Saturday. One documentary being highlighted is entitled Teach Your Children Well by local producers Gary Takesian and Roz Esposito where they highlight school violence against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth, particularly in light of the incidence with Larry King.  The evening will be capped off with a VIP Party and Men’s themed films.

On Sunday, The Center will show a collection of shorts, many of which were selected to be shown in the Cannes Film Festival, as well as Indie Fest. One such example is the film OMgasm by Actress/Writer/Producer and Director Alexandra Fulton.  The festival will end Sunday night with a VIP party and the showing of women’s themed films.

Visit our website at www.centerlb.org for full film descriptions, more photos, and to purchase tickets. Weekend Passes are only $75.00 (VIP parties not included with Weekend Pass) -- so buy the pass and see all the films!

The annual film festival is an opportunity for members of the community to get involved with The Center Long Beach and to meet other community members with similar interests. Volunteers are encouraged to call or visit The Center to sign up for committees and assist with logistics.

By issuing same-sex marriage licenses, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom uproots the status quo, attempts to change the way the United States of America looks at life, love, and marriage, and ignites what is our nation’s next great civil right issue.

PURSUIT OF EQUALITY is an emotionally charged film that puts a face on American citizens who strive for marriage equality. From the first frame of the film, even before the press is aware, this film crew is with Mayor Gavin Newsom’s senior staff as the nation’s first same-sex couple exchange their vows and ignites the most controversial civil rights topic in recent history.

The story continues on the streets, in the courtrooms, and on the steps of City Hall, where same-sex couples, finally validated on the happiest day of their lives, clash with church groups who declare that who they are and how they love is a sin.

In life changing moments, this film focuses on the compelling, human rights struggles surrounding same-sex marriage and captures the elation and despair of couples and families who are fighting for equal rights.

As the only film crew in the Mayors Chambers during the most crucial of times, this extraordinary film provides a telling ‘fly-on-the wall’ view of every turn as this historic event unfolds.

“…a moving document that put a human face on committed gay and lesbian couples who sought -- and are still seeking – equal treatment under the laws of the state and nation.”

Message_from_Kimberly_Woods_Executive_Director_Center_Long_Beach_No_on-Prop_8

The proponents of Prop 8, in their most recent ad campaign, have attempted to eliminate marriage for same-sex couples through the only weapon available to them -- fear and lies.

Their ad claims that the California Supreme Court "mandated" the right to marry for same-sex couples and, as a result, school children will be taught about same-sex marriage and that churches will lose their tax exempt status if Prop 8 passes.

Of course it's a blatant lie.

What the Court did was uphold the Constitution's promise of equality.

Clearly, honesty is not a value in which the proponents of Prop 8 believe.

Unfortunately, voters are believing their lies, and unless we can raise the significant money needed to create our own ads, telling the truth, they will win.

We can't let this attack go unanswered. We must tell Californians the truth.

They are spending millions of dollars to get their misleading message out to voters throughout California.

We are currently 10 million dollars behind in our fundraising efforts. This is not an impossible amount for our community to raise.

It is now very clear: the proponents of Prop 8 will stop at nothing to eliminate the right of same sex couples to marry. They will even use children as a political tool to mislead voters.

Help us respond to their ad—make a donation today.

We know that a growing number of voters are beginning to see Prop 8 for what it really is: an effort to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry.

We have recently shown to be slightly behind in the polls, and we are still behind in dollars.

And money will be a major factor in whether we win or we lose -- because this election will be decided on the airwaves. Whoever has more to spend and is most effective in their ads -- is more likely to win. It is that simple.

In the next three weeks, you can expect the proponents attack ads to get even uglier. The only way we can win is to match them dollar-for-dollar in ad buys- and then respond to their untrue attacks. We cannot let their ads go unanswered!

Will you help us win the critical battle of the airwaves? Donate now!

GET INVOLVED - GET THE WORD OUT!

Everyone’s help is needed now to defeat this initiative!  The only way we can win is if we identify 100,000 undecided voters and persuade them to vote NO! We have the perfect messages to talk with swing voters, but we just don’t have a big enough team in LONG BEACH to get the job done!
Come join us in building a big team of volunteers by calling your friends and family, fundraising, providing or helping to find daytime office space and/or evening phone bank space. Or help in other ways. Find out more by calling Kathleen Campisano, Long Beach Area Field Manager, 202.577.3139.

  • Volunteer for a phone bank on Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday evenings, recruit volunteers at an event, become a speaker or trainer, help with office work, help prep our clipboards with materials, find pizza and other food for volunteer actions, do data entry from home, help make confirmation calls from home, sign up your friends and family to help

Coming to The Art Theatre - 3 Days Only!
Oct. 14-16.  Tickets are $10

Eric (Tom Cavanagh) lives for all things hockey. Now in his thirties, he's managed to turn his stint as an ex- Toronto Maple Leaf into a full-time gig as a commentator for sports TV. He's living the dream! But when Eric's boyfriend Sam (Ben Shenkman) announces that they're to become temporary guardians of a young boy, Eric's comfortable world shatters. Enter Scot (Noah Bernett) -- a recently orphaned, budding queen of an 11 year old -- and Eric s mirror opposite. Freaked out by Scot's 'joie de vivre', Eric and Sam gently nudge Scot away from scented hand cream and all things pink, towards a more 'acceptable' pastime hockey. But after Scot's disastrous first game, Eric begins to rethink the compromises he s made in his own life in order to be 'accepted'.
