Q Film Festival 2008
October 10-12, 2008
The Center is proud to announce the 2008 Q Film Festival, which will take place October 10-12, 2008 at the newly renovated Art Theater on 4th St. in Retro Row of Long Beach.
The 2008 Q Film Festival will present several feature films and shorts, as well as documentaries, highlighting issues within the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community.
Opening night will feature local comedian, Carlease, and the showing of two episodes of the series Sordid Lives. The following cast members, as well as the producer and manager, will be present for a Q and A after the shows: DEL SHORES (MANAGER), JASON DOTTLEY (TY), ROSEMARY ALEXANDER (DR EVE), NEWELL ALEXANDER (WARDELL), DAVID COWGILL (ODELL), TED DETWILER (JACOB), EMERSON COLLINS (CO-PRODUCER & CHARACTER OF MAX), AND ANN WALKER (LAVONDA).
The cost of the opening night festivities is $40, or $60 if you attend the VIP party with cast members. Throughout the rest of the weekend ticket prices are $10 for shows prior to 6pm, and $15 for the men’s and women’s themed shows.
Pre and post VIP parties will take place throughout the weekend. Documentaries and Transgender films will be shown during the day on Saturday. One documentary being highlighted is entitled Teach Your Children Well by local producers Gary Takesian and Roz Esposito where they highlight school violence against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth, particularly in light of the incidence with Larry King. The evening will be capped off with a VIP Party and Men’s themed films.
On Sunday, The Center will show a collection of shorts, many of which were selected to be shown in the Cannes Film Festival, as well as Indie Fest. One such example is the film OMgasm by Actress/Writer/Producer and Director Alexandra Fulton. The festival will end Sunday night with a VIP party and the showing of women’s themed films.
Stay tuned to The Center’s website at www.centerlb.org for upcoming details.
The annual film festival is an opportunity for members of the community to get involved with The Center Long Beach and to meet other community members with similar interests. Volunteers are encouraged to call or visit The Center to sign up for committees and assist with logistics.

Pink Gala Wrap-Up!
The Center Long Beach hosted its 1st Annual Pink Gala, honoring Judith Light, Mayor Bob Foster, Wells Fargo, and Logo for their continuing support of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning community.
The event took place on August 16 aboard the beautiful Majestic yacht leaving out of Rainbow Harbor. Leslie Jordan welcomed guests aboard while signing books and taking pictures. Jillian Armenante and Jason Stuart hosted the evening’s award ceremony. “I thought they were hilarious,” said Genea Nicholson, youth volunteer at The Center Long Beach. “They were my favorite part of the evening.” Dave Mace, Vice President and Head of Original Programming, who is most recently known for his Executive Production of the critically acclaimed series Sordid Lives, accepted the award on behalf of Logo.
Various corporations and local businesses supported the event including BNSF Railway, Wells Fargo, Pink Vodka, Budweiser, Hansens, Pride Travel, Crystal Cruises, Lexus, Long Beach Post, Picture This Inspirations, New Daye Fitness, and Express Graphics and Printing. Also in attendance were Vice Mayor Val Lerch and Councilmember Tonia Reyes-Uranga. Mike Noll, Mayor of Signal Hill, Roberto Uranga, Long Beach City College Trustee, and Julie Ruiz-Raber, former Mayor of Carson, were also present.
There were over 225 people in attendance for the evening’s festivities. Guests were welcomed aboard by board chair, Ann Garrett, to enjoy a beautiful harbor cruise during a moonlit night, unique and fun silent auction items, dinner and an open bar. John Murphy and Michele Jensen won a week’s vacation from Pride Travel during the live auction portion of the evening. The organization made over $23,698 from the fundraiser which will go to support various programs and services at The Center Long Beach.
When asked how she felt about the night’s event, Executive Director, Kimberlee Woods stated, “It was great to see so many people come out and support The Center.” Ms. Woods acknowledged that the event would not have been possible without the help and collaboration of volunteers, board members, and community organizations. “It was truly a joint effort. It feels great to know that so many people really want us to succeed,” she claimed. If you missed the Pink Gala this year, there will always be next year!

Vote No on Proposition 8
EQUALITY FOR ALL Campaign Vote No on the Marriage Ban in November
Our State Constitution - and the law of our land - should guarantee the same rights to all Californians. That’s why we are urging you to vote No in November on the proposed constitutional amendment that attempts to ban marriage for LGBT couples.
This election is all about simple fairness. Regardless of how anyone feels about marriage for LGBT couples, people should not be singled out for unfair treatment under the laws of our state. Loving and committed LGBT couples who want to accept the responsibility that comes with marriage should be treated like everyone else – no better, and no worse.
It’s wrong to vote on people’s fundamental rights. The freedom to marry is fundamental, like the freedoms of religion and the freedom of speech – and that freedom must be protected. We all deserve the same right to personal privacy and the same right to decide for ourselves who to love and who to marry.
* VOTE NO on PROP 8 *
GET INVOLVED - GET THE WORD OUT!
Everyone’s help is needed now to defeat this initiative! The only way we can win is if we identify 100,000 undecided voters and persuade them to vote NO! We have the perfect messages to talk with swing voters, but we just don’t have a big enough team in LONG BEACH to get the job done!
Come join us in building a big team of volunteers by calling your friends and family, fundraising, providing or helping to find daytime office space and/or evening phone bank space. Or help in other ways. Find out more by calling Kathleen Campisano, Long Beach Area Field Manager, 202.577.3139.
Volunteer for a phone bank on Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday evenings, recruit volunteers at an event, become a speaker or trainer, help with office work, help prep our clipboards with materials, find pizza and other food for volunteer actions, do data entry from home, help make confirmation calls from home, sign up your friends and family to help
