Dear Friend of The Center,
Happy Holidays! With the Holiday season officially upon us, we thought we would take this time to reflect on all we have to be thankful for, and tell you what 2009 meant to The Gay and Lesbian Center of Long Beach.
Theres just no way to sugar-coat this, as you can imagine 2009 was a very challenging year for The Center financially. As all of us felt the impact of a bad economy, the past 12 months saw a decrease or elimination in corporate sponsorship dollars, government grant money, as well as personal giving.
Through this years rough economy, we tightened our belts to the very last notch to make sure we were able to continue to deliver our ground breaking programs and services to the Long Beach Community. In addition to growing our award-winning youth mentoring program (MYTE), we opened a new low-cost Mental Health Counseling Program which answered an unmet need in the community. Over 200 people a month came to The Center for free HIV/STD testing, and health counseling. And, The Center continued to play host to over 20 social and support programs ranging from a coming out group, to living with AIDS, bi-sexual chat, and many more.
Each one of these programs and services takes money; a resource that was in short supply this year. As you consider your options for your 2009 holiday charitable donations, we urge you to consider supporting our mission here at The Center.
We have an exciting 2010 planned! And why shouldnt we, its our 30th Anniversary!
Three decades of providing programs and service to the Long Beach community. So next year everything that we do will be under the umbrella theme of celebrating this milestone. From launching a more comprehensive HIV testing program, to parties, and reunions and new fundraising and membership programs, 2010 will be a year like no other in the history of The Center. Youll be hearing much more about this in January.
So, as we begin to close the books on 2009, we hope you can help us with a one time donation, or sustaining donation of $100 or more. Private donations like yours are crucial to maintain the general operating fund of The Center and essential to keeping our mission alive and well.
With Warmest Regards,
Ron Sylvester
