We are committed to providing services to the LGBTQ community and approach treatment with an emphasis on trauma, anxiety, and/or depression informed by experiences of external and internalized homo-bi-trans-phobia. We incorporate several approaches to therapy, including psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, strength-based, person-centered, humanistic, and mindfulness. These approaches are meant to collaborate with you on a path to wholeness, wellness, and healing from historical and ongoing trauma, including trauma caused by heterosexim, ciscentrism, racism, and structural oppressions.
Wounds from the past may present as anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and/or relational difficulties. Pain can also be hidden behind coping habits or risky behaviors that may exacerbate that pain, instead of treating it. Many in our community struggle with this in isolation. If you are ready to take a step toward healing, our mental health program is ready to support you.
Our Mental Health therapists are Marriage and Family trainees and interns and Clinical Social Work interns supervised by experienced licensed therapists.
The Mental Health Program at the LGBTQ Center of Long Beach offers individual, couples, group, and family therapy for those ages 13 and up. We do not have psychiatric services but are happy to provide community referrals to assist you with this need. We are not a certified site for court-mandated services but will support you with identifying the resources you need.
To begin counseling services at The Center, all clients must first participate in a brief phone assessment and schedule an initial intake appointment.
Therapy can be scheduled Monday to Friday 10 am to 8 pm, and Saturdays from 10 am to 3 pm, based on availability. Appointments last for 50 minutes and are scheduled on a weekly basis.
Fees for Services
Our counseling program is based on a sliding scale determined by the client’s monthly income and ability to pay. Payment amount is established prior to beginning therapy. We can confer with you regarding mental health referrals that match your health insurance or a proper financial or geographic fit for you, if The Center’s resources do not match your needs.
Pick up the phone and give us the call! Dial The Center at (562) 434-4455 and ask for The Mental Health Intake Team.
If no one is available to take your call, leave a message with your name, call back number, best times to reach you, and please let us know if it’s safe for us to leave you a message. We will return your call within 2 to 5 business days to schedule a free phone screening.
During your phone screening, an intake counselor will confer with you about your counseling needs. Our goal is to link all callers to mental health counseling, whether it be at The Center or with one of our community partners. We strive to match you with the services and/or counselor who best matches your needs. If it is determined that we are able to support your therapy goals, our Client Services Coordinator will set you up with a counselor at a weekly time that works for you.
We look forward to your call!
