February 2014
News from The Center Long Beach
What a fabulous January we had!

Your Center went into 2014 full speed ahead with a

Congressman Alan Lowenthal Speaks at State of The Center

number of great events kicking off the new year! Between hosting Leadership Long Beach for an all-day class, hosting a NAMI focus group just for our transgender community members, and hosting local scholar Dr. Marie Cartier’s first book reading and signing, we were pretty busy.

In January, we even managed to squeeze in our annual

State of The Center program and our 4th Annual Monster Ball Youth Dance which hosted over 150 youth from 33 different high schools.

This last month, our community was also out in full force supporting The Center. Between the Unitarian Universalist Church’s fabulous donation to The Center from their December collection drive to Empress Jackie’s bus run, we are so thankful for our community’s support in sustaining your community center.

We’re also proud to announce that local community members Sylvia Rodemeyer and Justin Boettcher are our newest board members! Both have years of experience in digital marketing and youth organization and we couldn’t be more thrilled for them to join The Center family. Make sure to introduce yourself next time you see them around!

We have a packed February ahead. As always, all the details are below.

In the meantime, don’t forget tickets to our Black & White Ball are on sale now! Join us for an evening of elegance and sophistication in honor of our LGBTQ community. This year, we’ll be formally recognizing E! Television’s Ross Matthews, State Senator Ricardo Lara, and the always amazing Jewels! More info on this great event is just below.

See in February!

Sincerely,

The Center Long Beach

The Center Hosts Film Screenings in Honor of Black History and Women’s History Months
Tuesday February 18, 2014 at 7:00pm
Sunday March 9, 2014 at 12:00pm

Join The Center as we celebrate feminist legend Audre Lorde’s 80th birthday with a special FREE screening of Jennifer Abod’s documentary “The Edge of Each Other’s Battles: The Vision of Audre Lorde.”

This splendid video captures Audre Lorde’s spirit: her energy, her vision, her work. We are thrilled and moved, energized and dazzled by Jennifer Abod’s imaginative weave of Audre’s poetry, commitment to justice and community, and passion for life. Her voice, in the context of the international, rainbow and wonderfully diverse “I Am You Sister” conference, should be presented in every history, literature, LGBTQ, and Women’s Studies Classroom.

Afterwards, stick around for a sneak preview of Jennifer’s new film “The Passionate Pursuits of Angela Bowen” screening at the Art Theatre on March 9, 2014 in honor of International Women’s Day!

This screening will take place at 7:00pm at The Center.CLICK HERE to RSVP.

In honor of International Women’s Day, The Center is proud to present a very special screening of Jennifer Abod’s documentary The Passionate Pursuits of Angela Bowen at the Historic Art Theatre (next door to The Center).

For six decades, Angela Bowen, classical dancer, dance teacher, mentor, black feminist lesbian social justice activist, professor and author has influenced and inspired untold numbers speaking out as strongly for the Arts, Black and Women’s Rights as she has for LGBTQ rights.

The film depicts Bowen’s life in the historical context of the times (1950s to present) with rare historic footage, photographs and interviews including: Bowen’s dance mentor, her dance partner, her former husband, partner, children, sister, scholars, activists, and former dance students and California State University Long Beach students Bowen’s candid and compelling stories allow us to understand how race, class, gender, age, and sexuality played into her decisions and choices, her mission, and strategies for survival.

The Passionate Pursuits of Angela Bowen addresses universal themes of family, work, love, and loss. This film is intended to challenge and inspire diverse audiences to pursue their own dreams with tenacity and courage, but not for themselves alone.

After the screening, stick around for audience Q&A with Angela Bowen, filmmaker Jennifer Abod, Martha Wheelock, Jaysary M. Hart, and Angela’s former student Rosni Chabra. Following the Q&A a reception with food and drinks will take place next door at The Center.
