March 2013 Issue
News from The Center Long Beach
The Center’s Staff and Board with Melissa Etheridge at the HSLB LGBT History Project preview gala in February.

We’d like to extend our sincerest thanks to theHistorical Society of Long Beach for hosting a star-studded, jam-packed preview gala for Coming Out in Long Bach: The LGBT History Project. Now open to the public, this year-long exhibit explores the history of our LGBT community and the organizations, including The Center, that have contributed to our community’s health, wellness, and growth. Congratulations HSLB on hosting a fabulous party and incredible exhibit!

Here at The Center, we hosted our first ever LGBTQ Prospective Parents Symposium on February 9. In collaboration with the LA Gay & Lesbian Center’s Family Service’s Department, we hosted over 50 prospective parents and more than 20 local resources for people looking to grow their families. The event was such a great success, we’re looking to host additional events for prospect and current LGBTQ parents throughout the year.

As always, the month of March will feature something for everyone here at The Center. From art shows, to seminars, to our core programs and services, it’s our honor to serve as your local LGBT community center and it’s our pleasure to welcome you in.

Finally, The Center was incredibly saddened to learn of the passing of Rudy de la Mor. Rudy delighted us with his music for years in Long Beach and we will greatly miss him.

The Center Presents: California Landscapes

Now through April 30, 2013

The Center Long Beach is pleased to announce the next in a series of on-going art exhibits featuring LGBT artists. A collection entitled California Landscapes by Greg Fritsche will be featured throughout the Center from

March 3 through April 30.

Fritsche is a California native, and has been a resident of Long Beach since 1980.  He specializes in landscapes, oil on canvas.  His inspiration has always been the natural beauty of the California coast. He has traveled extensively throughout the state and takes most interest in the incredible flora along the coastlines of  Carmel, Mendocino, San Luis Obispo, La Jolla and Laguna.  Fritsche says he paints in the tradition of other great California impressionists.

All of his work is available for sale with partial proceeds benefitting the programs and services at The Center. “This a wonderful way to engage the community and profile some our most talented local artists” says Phyllis Schmidt, a member of the board of The Center and chair of the art committee.  “We look forward to welcoming the community into The Center every two month for a new show” she added.

The Center’s first exhibit of the year entitled Gardens: oil paintings on canvas, by artist Donald Tiscareno ran through February 28.  To date this vibrant collection of succulents and cacti indigenous to southern California has been a huge success, wowing Center patrons and selling more than a dozen pieces.

The Center is located at 2017 East 4th Street in Long Beach and open Monday thru Friday from 11am – 9pm and on Saturdays from noon – 3pm.
